Curls are delicate & precious. Make caring for natural curls as stress-free as possible with these handy tips.
- Cut out heat styling. Heat dehydrates the hair, adding to frizzing problems & damage to the hair shaft, destroying your curl pattern
- Ditch the chemicals. Straighteners, relaxers, silicones, parabens and anything unpronounceable should not be used on your hair.
- Change your pillowcase. A silk/satin pillowcase can do wonders to preserving your curls. The ultra smooth surface does not pull moisture from the hair like other fabrics, and is not abrasive on the hair. A silk bonnet also does the trick.
- Don’t dry your hair with a towel! If you must, leave your hair in the towel for only a few min max. Try and use an old t-shirt or something similar instead. Your curls will thank you.
- Use the correct products for your hair. There are so many variables with curly hair – thickness, density, porosity, moisture & protein levels, curl pattern. All these variables mean no two people are exactly alike. Find what your hair likes and stick with it. Less is definitely more – if you find yourself having to use too many products on your hair after washing it, then there is a problem.
- Hair dyes can also wreck your hair. Consider carefully the impact on your locks before deciding on which brand to use, if any.
- Choose natural shampoos free of silicones & other nasties. If the shampoo you are using is stripping your hair, switch to something low-poo like the Crème Shampoos or Aqua Curls.
