The Cat That Got The Cream…

vitamin E cream story, for a cat with bedsores

First published 28 April 2022.

We have a cat with a long term illness. Ok, put it this way, she should have been dead 2 years ago, according to medical science. So technically it’s not supposed to be long term. Anyway, I digress…

From being an active, athletic cat, she became a recluse, not going outside at all. She spent at least a year of her illness sleeping on the hard windowsill, refusing every soft bed. As a result, much like a human when bedridden, she developed bedsores on all 4 legs from the constant pressure. These would bleed and never got a chance to heal as she lay on them 24/7.

She started getting a bit more active the last 6 months or so, but still these bedsores remained. It’s very difficult to treat, as anything you put on them gets licked off, and the abrasive cat tongue just makes them more raw. You can’t bandage them up as they need to dry out.

I made our vitamin E cream (finally, after years of meaning to) and we started putting it on her bedsores, as well as her irritated, scabby skin. It’s perfectly edible and safe, so no worries there. From the first application, she was noticeably more comfortable. From the second application, she stopped sleeping on the windowsill! She now spends her days outside, and is eating like a horse. And her bedsores and scabby skin are healing beautifully.

I don’t have any photos of how her heels looked before we started, sorry. Or maybe it’s a good thing – too gory for this post 😄

The point is, vitamin E has always been our go-to for healing, whether it’s sunburn, scarring or severe burns from soldering irons or car exhausts (yes, those are stories for another day). BUT we have never had a preservative-free, edible vitamin E cream before. I do believe that my version is more effective than what we used to use, because the butters and oils I use are raw and unrefined, loaded with other vitamins and minerals naturally. And so the Vitamin E Healing Balm is now available to you too!

As with all of our butters and lotions, a little goes a long way!

HANDY TIP: Think about how little you need to use, and then use less than that 😉
